LineBox Studio inc. is a fully licensed Toronto and Ottawa based architectural firm that provides a fresh and progressive outlook on how people live, work and play in the architectural context. Philosophy as Architects LineBox Studio understand design as a cultural act which engages their everyday experiences and brings together individuals with their built environment. Their design philosophy is grounded in a basic conviction and fundamental belief that great architecture is less about style and more about discovery.

2006년 설립된 GSoft는 전 세계 근로자들의 복지를 도울 수 있는 기술 개발을 목표로 하는 소프트웨어 회사다. 1913년 몬트리올 현대 산업의 상징으로 지어진 건물은 북아메리카에 세워진 가장 큰 벽돌 건축물 중 하나다. GSoft는 수십 년 동안 공장으로 사용되는 등 지금까지 다양한 용도로 개조된 이 건물의 1층, 약 2천 평의 공간에 자리하고 있었다. 오피스의 디자인을 맡은 LineBox Studio는 여전히 멋스러운 매력을 지니고 있는 건물의 구조를 그대로 살리기로 결심했고, 파이프, 벽돌, 금속 구조물 등 옛 특정 요소들을 눈에 띄게끔 남겨두었다.

GSoft's DNA is made up of skateboarding. From the company's start to today, it still rings true. Some of the things which arose when thinking about skateboarding and skate culture as a whole were the freedom to explore endless possibilities and the strong, passionate community which surrounds it. The design of the office space is done in a way that encourages exploration. There are multiples of areas to discover and explore in GSoft's new home.

Of course, what would skateboarding be without friends? What would GSoft be without their community? Nestled in the historic industrial neighbourhood of Pointe-Saint Charles, GSoft is proud to represent. Instead of leading right into the main office space, the main entrance leads to the main communal hall, open to the public for talks and presentations and even has a show kitchen for the talented chefs of Montreal. With GSoft's new office in Montreal, we are trying to convey the joy that comes from exploration and the close bonds that are built within a tight knit community. Oh yeah, they've also got a half pipe. No big deal.

LineBox는 프로젝트를 진행하기 전 건물에 대한 역사를 연구했다. 이들은 건물의 옛 모습이 남아있는 19세기 초의 사진을 발견했고, 이를 토대로 작업을 시작했다. 두꺼운 철판과 높은 천장, 붉은 벽돌을 그대로 되살렸고, 풍부한 자연광 유입을 위해 금속 트러스 구조를 다시 설치했다. 또 하나의 특이점은 사무실을 맞이하는 메인 공간이 업무실이 아닌 거대한 커뮤니티홀로 연결된다는 것이다. 본사의 메인 정문은 토크와 프레젠테이션을 위해 대중들에게 개방되어 있으며, 몬트리올의 재능 있는 요리사를 위한 오픈 키친도 마련되어 있다.

We are talking about all these concrete columns with rounded angles, protected by thick riveted steel plates, high vaulted ceilings, large red brick walls and of course this magnificent metal structure on which the cathedral roof rests in the Ghall and in the central corridor. While doing our research on the history of the building we found photos dating from the early 19th century showing the original appearance of the Ghall. It was then that we decided to reinstall skylights, sandblast the walls and metal trusses in order to bring back natural light and revive the red brick from the old days.

새로운 사무실의 DNA는 스케이트보드로 이루어져 있다. 스케이트보드와 스트릿 문화가 가지고 있는 무한한 가능성과 열정, 자유분방함이 GSoft와 맞닿아 있다고 생각했고, 스튜디오는 드넓은 공간에 이를 다채롭게 풀어냈다. 인테리어 디자인의 베이스는 공간의 탐사를 장려하는 방식으로 구성됐다. 직원 혹은 방문객들은 사무실에 들어서는 순간 곳곳에 숨겨져 있는 여러 공간을 발굴하고 탐험하고 싶어지게 된다. A지점에서 B지점까지 도달하는 다양한 루트가 존재하며, 직원들은 종종 숨겨진 통로를 발견하게 될지도 모른다. 내부 공간이지만 스케이트보드, 자전거, 인라인 등 다양한 이동수단을 즐길 수 있다.
